Industrial staircases and ornamental staircases for the home

Galvanised steel and glass contemporary industrial staircase

Industrial staircases are heavy-duty, durable stairs built for safety and functionality in demanding commercial and manufacturing environments. They are often prefabricated and modular for quick installation and can be customised to fit a variety of industrial settings, including warehouses, factories and outdoor utility areas.

Common materials and features

Industrial staircases are built to withstand heavy use, industrial wear and tear and environmental factors, thus the use of:

  • Steel: A common and durable material for frames and treads. It offers high tensile strength and load-bearing capacity.
  • Galvanized steel: Steel coated in zinc to provide superior corrosion and weather resistance, making it ideal for outdoor and damp environments.
  • Aluminum: A lightweight and durable option that is also corrosion-resistant.
  • Treads: Stair treads are designed to be non-slip to prevent accidents. Options include:
  • Perforated plates: Allow liquids and debris to drain through.
  • Checker plates: Raised, textured metal for increased grip.
  • Grating: Open metal grid that provides excellent drainage and traction.
  • Safety features: Handrails, guardrails and kickplates are integrated to meet safety standards and reduce fall risks.

Some examples of industrial staircase types

Different types of industrial stairs are available to suit various space constraints and access needs:

  • Straight stairs: The simplest and most common design, running in a single, continuous flight. They can be installed quickly and require minimal space.
  • Landing stairs: Include one or more landings, or horizontal platforms, that break up long flights of stairs. This provides a resting point or a place to change direction and may be required for safety by building codes.
  • Spiral stairs: Feature a curved design that wraps around a central post, saving floor space. They are often used as fire escapes or in cramped indoor areas.
  • Crossover stairs: Built to bridge and provide safe passage over obstacles like conveyor belts, pipes, or other equipment on a production floor.

Safety and regulations

Industrial staircases are built to strict regulations to ensure worker safety and workplace efficiency.

  • Compliance with standards: Staircases must meet safety codes, such as Part K of the Building Regulations in the UK.
  • Load-bearing capacity: A high-quality industrial staircase is structurally sound and built to handle the weight of personnel, equipment and materials.
  • Visibility: For safety, treads with contrasting nosings or a different color can be used to make the edge of each step more visible.
  • Slip resistance: Treads with anti-slip coatings, patterns, or materials like grated metal minimize the risk of slips and falls.
