Reactions to the Lumpy Skin Disease Culls

When farmers in France have something to complain about to the authorities, they don’t mince their words or, indeed, their actions.

There is currently unrest in the farming community in France due, in particular, to the French government’s management of lumpy skin disease (LSD), a contagious viral disease in cattle and water buffalo causing fever, painful skin nodules (lumps), swollen lymph nodes and reduced milk. This leads to economic losses for the farmers, but it does not affect humans or food safety, with meat and milk safe to consume.

Farmers are therefore reacting to the government’s decision to cull whole herds with various measures. In the Gironde region this December, they decided to block the A63 motorway south of Bordeaux, causing very significant traffic difficulties and miles of traffic, with around fifty sleeping on the motorway overnight.

On the verge of opening a new restaurant in Bordeaux, Michelin-starred chef Philippe Etchebest had a warm word for the farmers who were protesting, as a citizen and not as a celebrity. He had colleagues, suppliers, and friends present at the blockade.

"Without our farmers, I wouldn't exist. I live through their products, through what they do every day," he declared, standing next to one of his suppliers.

Since setting up their blockade on December 14th, the farmers have also received support from numerous citizens and a restaurateur who came to the site with his food truck.

South-west Scotland’s third annual Farming for the Future Conference

Farming for the Future: Nature and Resilience

South-west Scotland’s third annual Farming for the Future Conference will take place on Thursday 13 November at the Carrick Centre in Maybole, running from 10am to 3pm.

Organised by the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere Partnership, Propagate and NFU Scotland, this free event brings together farmers, land managers and others involved in land-based enterprise to share ideas, experiences and practical knowledge.

The 2025 conference will focus on the theme ‘Nature and Resilience’, continuing the conversation around farming practices that support environmental sustainability while strengthening profitability.

The event will be chaired by Andrew McCornick, Dumfriesshire farmer and former NFU Scotland President. The programme includes a range of speakers from Ayrshire and beyond, with breakout sessions covering topics such as agroforestry, resilient dairy and vegetable production.

Attendance is free, but places must be booked in advance.

Time for a tidy-up and preparing for next year

In November, UK farmers will be focusing on winter preparation and maintenance, including finishing harvests of root vegetables, bringing livestock indoors, preparing land for spring and general farm upkeep.

Crop and land work

Farmers begin ploughing fields for crops that will be sown in the spring.
Harvesting of winter vegetables like beetroot, turnips, parsnips, leeks and carrots continues, though most of the main harvest is completed in October.
Stored potatoes are sorted by size for transport to shops or kept for the farming family.
Some farmers may spread manure, adhering to regulations that prevent spreading on frozen ground.
Clearing and prepping fields for the next growing season is done.

Livestock management

Animals are brought indoors for shelter from the colder weather.
Grazing animals' diets need to be supplemented with feeds like sugar beet and hay, especially when grass quality declines.
Calves are weaned onto a concentrate feed towards the end of the month.
Male calves are castrated.
Some animals are vaccinated and tracked, though this is more common in the spring.

General maintenance

Machinery upkeep: Ensuring all farm machinery is in working order is crucial for the year ahead.
General repairs: Farmers undertake repairs, painting and cleaning as part of their general farm upkeep.
Hedge cutting: This activity continues and must be completed by March to avoid disturbing nesting birds.

Wool prices in the UK

No joy for farmers

In 2024, average prices paid to UK farmers for wool were £0.20-£0.57 per kilogram, depending on the wool type, but these prices often fail to cover the cost of shearing, which can be around £1.50-£1.75 per ewe, leading to financial losses for many sheep farmers.

Recent increases are seen as an improvement, but the market remains volatile, and some farmers have even chosen to burn their wool in protest at the low returns, which have plummeted significantly since the 1950s.

Fine wool (e.g., Suffolk): £0.20/kg
Medium wool (e.g., Texel): £0.26/kg

What is hot dip galvanised steel?

Hot-dip galvanised steel is steel coated in a protective layer of zinc by immersing it in a bath of molten zinc, which metallurgically bonds to the steel. This process provides durable, long-lasting, and cost-effective protection against rust and corrosion, even in harsh environments. The galvanising process covers all parts of the steel, including edges and corners, offers superior protection and results in a tough, reliable coating that can last for decades with little to no maintenance.

This is the process that MW Engineering & Fabrication use for all their products, so you can be assured of long-lasting, tough equipment.

The Process

Cleaning: The steel is thoroughly cleaned of any grease, oil, rust, or mill scale through degreasing and acid treatment.
Fluxing: A flux solution is applied to the cleaned steel, which further removes oxides and helps the zinc adhere properly.
Dipping: The cleaned and fluxed steel is immersed in a bath of molten zinc at around 450°C (860°F).
Bonding: The zinc metallurgically bonds to the iron in the steel, forming layers of zinc-iron alloys and a final layer of pure zinc.
Cooling: The finished steel is cooled and then inspected to ensure the coating is smooth, thick, and free of defects.

Essential in this heat

We're reading it everywhere - global warming is with us and although this summer hasn't been without its bad weather, it has also brought with it to the UK some periods of very hot weather.

We as humans certainly aren't used to this, but our livestock seem to acclimatise to it better than us, although they do need our help. Our attention during this hot weather should focus on preventing heat stress and ensuring animal welfare. This includes providing ample shade, access to clean, cool water, and minimizing unnecessary handling and transport.

We also need to consider ventilation in buildings where animals are housed.

We need to take care to:

Ensure a constant, fresh supply of clean water is available, as water intake can increase by 10-20% in hot weather.
Provide ample shade, either natural or artificial, for animals to escape direct sunlight.
Consider cooling down animals with water, especially dairy cows waiting to be milked, to prevent heat stress.

Llamas or Alpacas? Alpacas or Llamas?

What's the difference, I hear you say

Alpacas and llamas are both South American camelids which are members of the biological family Camelidae. As such, they are related to dromedary camels and Bactrian camels.

They do, however, display distinct differences in their appearance, temperament and purpose.

Size : Llamas are larger than alpacas, weighing 300 to 600 pounds compared to the typical 120-200 pounds of an alpaca.
Ears : Llamas have long, curved, banana-shaped ears, while alpacas have shorter, straighter, spear-shaped ears.
Face : Llamas have longer faces and noses with less fur, whereas alpacas have shorter, rounded, fluffy faces.
Wool/Fibre : Alpacas are bred for their soft, luxurious fleece, while llamas have coarser hair and are primarily used as pack animals or for their guard instincts.
Temperament : Alpacas tend to be more timid and shy, while llamas are generally more independent and confident.
Uses : Llamas are used as pack animals for carrying heavy loads and also as guard animals for livestock. Alpacas are prized for their fleece and are used to produce high-quality textiles.

Future Farming Investment Scheme

Applications for £14 million fund for Scotland just opened in July

According to the Scottish Government website at https://www.gov.scot/news/future-farming-investment-scheme/, "a new flexible grants scheme offering farmers and crofters capital investment will open next month (July)."

"The £14 million Future Farming Investment Scheme offers flexible capital grants to support investments in efficiency, nature and climate friendly farming. It will provide priority support in a number of areas, including for new entrants, and young farmers, small farms and tenants."

Furthermore, the scheme will provide upfront payments of up to £20,000 at up to 100% grant rate and give people the freedom to choose the most appropriate capital investment to improve their business.

The Scottish Government recognises the importance of small suckler cow herds in some of our most remote and fragile areas. These cows deliver for biodiversity, landscapes, they help to sustain people and deliver socio-economic benefits, so from the 2026 scheme, farms claiming for 10 calves or fewer will receive a derogation from the calving-interval condition.

According to the British Goat Society , goat farming is an industry which is viewed by some as a high-risk opportunity, although that usually applies to larger numbers.

You'll no doubt have noticed that goat milk and goats milk products are now on sale in most supermarkets. Although there is an increase in the amount of goat meat sold in the UK, it is generally liquid milk that represents the bulk of the market.

Although goat farming is perceived as a high-risk opportunity by some, there are farmers who decide to branch out on a smaller scale, say less than 100 goats and their milk is usually processed at the farm, for example for making specialist cheeses.

Diversification in the Farming World

When needs must...

When needs must, diversification is the name of the game in the farming world. No-one can forget the horrors of the mass outbreak of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in the 1980s / 90s in the UK when over four million head of cattle were slaughtered in an effort to contain the outbreak. 178 people died after contracting vCJD through eating infected beef and exports were banned, leaving the beef farming world in a spin.

Fast forward to 2019-20 and the outbreak of Covid around the world and the farming industry was again left devastated. Customers of shops including butchers were discouraged from going out, the hospitality industry virtually closed down and the outlets for farming produce were greatly reduced.

In between these two disasters came the Brexit effect which led to many farmers losing their labour supply at all levels, but particularly at entry level. The UK's farming population is, in general, ageing and the influx of young labour from abroad was particularly necessary in this sector.

This has led to farmers having to consider diversifying their income sources. It was quite a common practice in the past to use the farmhouse as a bed and breakfast venue, keeping the farmer's wife busy and this was sometimes accompanied by allowing the guests to visit certain parts of the farm, especially where children were present and wanted to see and pet the animals, insofar as this was possible.

Nowadays, farmers have had to become even more inventive due to circumstances and have discovered many new ways of not simply making money, but opening their farms to the public to help raise awareness.

Take the rise in the number of alpaca farms in the UK, not all linked to farms of course, but many are. Alpacas are relatively low maintenance, quite cheap to feed, both of which combined make them easy and cheap to care for. They are also very docile animals, so they are great around young children, older folk and those with physical or mental disabilities although, unless they have been trained on the halter from a young age, they don't like being petted too much. But they're still a huge attraction for young and old alike.

There are more than a few people turning to the rural lifestyle in these modern times. But what are the alternatives if you haven't been brought up on a farm and don't know how to run one?

Alpacas are quite low maintenance animals to rear and do not cost a lot to feed which makes them relatively easy and cheap to care for. They are also very docile animals, so they are great around young children, older folk and those with physical or mental disabilities.

They are not, however, the type of animal that would be number one in a petting zoo as they can be wary of humans and dislike being touched. But it is possible to train some on the halter at an early age so they can be petted.

You should keep alpacas in groups of at least three as they are herd animals. They’re easy to care for. Spend time with the alpacas and you will learn what is normal behaviour for them. This allows you to spot any problems at an early stage as they are quite good at hiding any illnesses.

· supplements every day to ensure adequate vitamin and mineral intake, especially for lactating females and weanlings.

Your alpaca shelter should contain internal pens with adequate ventilation, a water supply and a feeding area .

We're now into the season of the agricultural shows. What is often classed as the major agricultural show in the Scottish calendar, the Royal Highland Show at Ingliston just outside Edinburgh, is already over for 2025.
